I posted the following discussion a while back https://goccf.com/t/34504 and got in trouble as I pointed to a certain country as the source of much of the counterfeiting which happens on ebay. While I could not present empirical data as to the percentage of coins coming from this country, my experience and discussions with people have noted this is common.

Quote:found the original on Heritage http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...src=pr#PHOTO so this one is clearly a fake coin and fake slab. Interesting how that slabbed $1 de-toned since February? Pretty damning, imo. Quote:...got in trouble as I pointed to a certain country as the source of much of the counterfeiting which happens on ebay. There, an important point was made to distinguish culture from the fraudulent business activities of these forgers (and distributors)

there was a article about how to spot fake PCGS slabs on CoinWorld or some other publication and one of the tell tell signs was a break in the plastic where the original is solid and the "L" shaped part where the slabs fit together is wide and mishapen. The Trade dollar is also sign because if you know the series or have looked at them enough you can see this one isn't real. If you look at the font on the fake label and look at the one on the real label you will also see the font doesn't match

Here are the two slabs. First the coin from the February, 2008 Heritage auction, in slab serial number 12295397: Now the ebay auction slab, serial number 12295397: These are pretty clearly not the same coin. This situation illustrates why the new DGS grading service (formally PCI) has decided to provide on-line photos of their slabbed coins. The collector who bid on this Chinese forgery might have avoided a big mistake if he had been able to view the genuine coin first.

Unfortunately, ebay has become a safe haven for fraudsters and counterfeiters. Pretty sad. I've been a member since 1997 and have watched it go down hill bigtime. They should lock these folks up and throw away the key . Knowledge and educating yourself is key to not being taken. Too bad this guy got taken. I hate to see that.

I saw a Taler (PCGS) on ebay and something looked off on both slab and coin. Price was low throughout with light bidding. My guess is that "caveat emptor" was applied by most.
