Hey guys first post. I found this in change I got back last year and can't get a solid answer on what it is and possibly a value range (if any of course) Anyone ever come across this? I'm posting comparison pics of a silver dime along side and both on the scale so hopefully that helps. Appreciate any advice or input. Thanks!

Just environmental toning from an unknown source. Not unusual.

Thanks for your input and the welcome bud. You cant tell very well in the pics but the rim is silver all the way around and it's a consistent copperish/light gold color on both sides. Does that still sound like environmental damage?

It's really hard to tell with these pics but I can't seem to capture the way it looks in person. The rim being solid silver color all the way around is what has me thinking that if any damaging toning wouldn't hit both sides equally yet leave the rim the original color.

@th, first welcome to CCF. Second, while it is perhaps a bit unusual for the rims to be untoned while the rest of both faces to be toned, it seems like that is exactly what happened in this case.

Environmental toning/staining. Not unusual for the rims to appear silver-ish, that's just the base metal (nickel) showing through, the toning has just worn off in those areas. How did the toning/staining happen? Probably from being a coffee cup holder coin. Not a mint error, simply PMD.

The rims will make more contact with other, especially flat, surfaces, so the staining may have gotten worn off there while remaining on the faces.

Also note the torch, being the highest point, will also show the color change. This is a coating on the coin, not a missing clad issue. At true missing clad will be red on color and the highest spots on colors, remains red. Also the strike will be weaker because of the missing height of the planchet. So these are not error coins. Just a coin event the coin is going through. Not a premium for a coin. Something to return to circulation.
