This is why two of the bell ringers here in Denver have asked me if the BU Martin Van Buren Dollars that I dropped in their kettles were gold coins!

Yesterday, our family had a pre-Christmas get-together Lunch at a restaurant downtown. On the way there, I stop by the Mint and get more Martin Van Buren dollars for my kettle drops, and some to pay for my parking. Yes, most of Denver's parking meters DO take 26.5 mm Dollar Coins (none take notes, so there's another advantage of coins!)

After lunch, I'm walking on the 16th Street Mall (trying to walk off my lunch ) and I'm dropping Dollars into Salvation Army kettles as I walk along.

A bell ringer sees my Dollar and asks "Was that a gold coin you dropped in there?!" I said, "No, It's a new Presidential dollar that I just got from the Mint, only a few blocks away!" (I show him another one) He says "I just got an old gold coin two days ago!" I asked "A Krugerrand?" He says "No, an old American one from 1893!" I went "Wow!" He was wearing a name badge, "Mike Marshall".

No, I didn't know that the Rocky Mountain News was going to do an article about this. PS: Some of the comments posted after the article are either amusing or offensive, depending on your mood...

This happens every year at differing places in the country. It's my belief that there's a group of gold collectors whose hearts are even larger than their wallets, and each year they donate coins for this purpose to some preselected member who places them in their home city.

The Salvation Army seems to get at least one gold coin every December in the Denver area, usually they're Krugerrands.

Donating 1890's Double Eagles (as opposed to common bullion gold coins) definitely ID's the donor(s) as a 'coin collector'. I'd suspect that both were donated by the same person, or if they are separate donors, the second donor knew about the first donation and 'matched' it.

It is a bit fun to be mistaken for a gold coin donor!
