I have never used this stuff before. I have a Lincoln Cent with a "filled" D because of grime. "In God We Trust" is also grimey. Will Acetone damage coins or eliminate them from TPG consideration? Thanks.

Acetone will not harm the coins. Be sure to throughly rinse them in water and pat dry after the acetone soak.

It's unlikely that acetone will affect your "grime" much, and there's the possibility of a chemical reaction between acetone and the copper in the presence of light.

If you have the magnification and enough light, I'd go after it with a thorn. Failing that, soak it in a shot glass of water for a couple days, freeze the whole thing and then allow it to thaw. A couple cycles of this should break loose anything the water can soak into, without touching the coin.

I would definitely try acetone before picking at it physically with a thorn, especially if you've got an unsteady hand. The acetone-and-light reaction is only significant when a shiny, uncirculated copper coin is soaked for far too long; if your coin is "grimy", I assume the coin's lustre is not an issue.

If acetone is going to work, it'll work fast. A minute soaking at most is all it should need. I'd also suggest using an eyedropper to squirt a jet of acetone at the affected areas. If that doesn't remove your grime, then it's not "grime" or anything organic-based. If it's corrosion rather than "grime", acetone won't do anything to it.

I've never heard of an acetone-washed coin being rejected by a TPG.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to try a warm water soak and a sharp wooden toothpick first. I can't see this harming the coin. Like I said, the "D" is filled and I just want that gunk out of there.

One possible caution would be if the grime contains grit or crystals from verdigris.
If one of those gets between the coin and toothpick, it could dig a bright scratch into the coin. I once had the unpleasant experience of discovering that myself. If it's a valuable coin, proceed with care.

Just a few things,
Would it be better to use distilled water to rinse off the coin
Also,i sometimes use a worn out tooth brush and warm soapy water.

I'd recommend using a range of solvents first: water, acetone and then xylene. I'd try this before using any physical means. If it's verdigris, a short soak in VERDI-GONE™ would definately get it out.

All the other comments about acetone are true. In the interest of disclosure, I should mention that I'm an extraordinarily paranoid person.

Me too Super. I am a soul of caution. If this was a $1-2 coin, I would not care so much. It happens to be a little more $$ than that.
Thanks BadThad. I will try that first in that order. I've looked at the MM through my loupe and it does not appear to be crystallized but it is medium green in color. My guess would be verdigris. I'll order some VERDI-GONE if this doesn't work

OK, VERDI-GONE™ is not recommended for BU coins. It will be fine on a VF brown with well-oxidized surfaces.
