The 58-D looks to have damage on the reverse. Not sure from this pic. The 59 looks MS63RD and the 09-VDB looks MS65RD. Nice coins!

What held the 09 back from 66 or 67 ?

I see many hits on the 59 for a 64 and only a few on the 09 and yet only 1 point difference ?

Looks to be some discoloration on the cheek, jaw and back of portrait. Besides, I rarely photograde to 66 or higher without really good pictures and general paranoia about over-grading. LOL

What are you getting at? The 09 is definately not a proof.

Thad take a close look at the P in pluribus and the A and E in America , these devices are definitely different than the ones on my VDB's and I was wondering if you had compared the die to yours .

The P on mine is much rounder on the loop and the one pictured is more pointy , the E of America on mine has a tilted center leg and the A's on mime have equal openings above the cross bar .

There are a couple of other slight differences also .

its just something I do .

Good eye! The P is definately pointy. The A is a little rounded. Looks like a later die state coin.

The matte proofs can be hard to spot, but generally they have a surface that is somewhat lack luster grainy or granular appreance(not shiny ) like a normal business strike BU coin and the rims down to the field will be much more square than a normal business strike which has a more coved appearance from rim top to field .
and of course in original state they are sharper in the small details being struck twice and with greater pressure than business strike coins which are struck once at somewhat lower pressures .

the best way to be able to spot them is to look at as many examples as you can .

the reason the P caught my eye was because I was looking at a proof 09 VDB on thebowers and merena auction site earlier and noticed that the die that struck that coin also had a pointed P in pluribus .

take a look

I agree it has a shot at 66 but like BadThad said, it's tough to grade a coin that high from photos.

I go from the gut on what PCGS/NGC would give it too.
