All,

I have 21 1964 JFK HDs, all in MS from MS-61 to maybe MS-66. There seem to be so many out there on ebay. I wonder whether I should just add the MS-61-63s to my silver melt box. It's obviously not worth getting them graded with silver at $25+.

Comments?

Thanks.

Bill

This always trade near melt at my LCS. They made a ton and most of them were hoarded, I'd pretty much melt them.

Don't forget to check these for the DDOs, TDOs, and QDOs. A lot of them are prett obvious and those bring a premium.

Also RPMs - there are a couple better looking ones. Although I don't know if the RPMs bring a premium.

The future of these is to be made into a brand new silver ingot.

All,

After careful review, I have determined that none of my 1964 JFK HDs are higher than MS-64. All of them have at least a couple flaws under the loupe that prevent them from reaching even an MS-65. I have one ANACS MS-64 on ebay right now and will consider my options if thyat sells.

Thanks for all your kind offers of assistance.

Best,

Bill

Curiously very few coins get melted these days. The refiners do buy coins "at melt/for melting" but generally make more money selling them in bulk to companies like Ampex or Littletons.

Not well known is the fact that at the height of the great silver melt; the refiners had a lack of buyers for bars. Contrary to what had been posted all over the internet, there was actually a surplus of silver on the market, which soon turned into a glut. China, for instance, had a seven year supply of industrial silver, and Russia a five year supply. Large buyers had their fill and were literally runing out of room to store it. The two refiners we dealt with actually stopped to refuse to take orders when silver hit about $40/oz. I think this more than anything killed the silver market. Our shop was left holding 100k in silver when the bottom dropped out.

Much later we found out that our refiner was actually selling bags of 90 to the large corps like Silvertown, Ampex, et al.

To this day the market rarely melts. I think they learned their lesson.
