The coat of arms on the reverse of this Conder token is not that of Manchester, but rather the crest of Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, who is credited with sponsoring the construction of the world's first modern canal (a "navigation" in the parlance of the time) for the purpose of shipping coal to Manchester from his mines in Worsley.
Francis Egerton, Duke of Bridgewater (1736 - 1803)
