The coat of arms on the obverse of this Conder token is that of the House of Howard. At the time Charles Howard was the 11th Duke of Norfolk.
The edge reads, "PAYABLE AT N•BOLINGBROKES HABERDASHER & C• NORWICH" with a "• X" between the beginning and end of this legend.
Nathaniel Bolingbroke, besides operating his haberdashery, was also recorded as engaged in silversmithing. These occupations are not so disconnected as they might seem, for decorative pins, more often than not custom made, were typically counted among the items a haberdasher supplied.
Bolingbroke was well connected socially and politically, as evidenced by his later election as mayor of Norwich.
