Hi,

I was wondering how you guys sort coins? I've just been grabbing 3 or 4 rolls worth of coins and place them on my laminate counter top in my Kitchen. I look for date indicators and just slide the coins in certain piles on the counter. Does sliding coins on a Kitchen counter cause damage to the coins?

Thanks for your reply.

James.

I would not chance it. I doubt it but, put them on a clean cloth and sort them that way. I know the counter is faster but again, I would not chance it especially if they are MS or AU coins.

I use a padded 'card table' with a light colored towel over it. The padding helps my forearms when I rest them on the table to hold a coin under the magnifying glass (using cotton gloves). If I drop a coin, the towel/padding does not damage the coin and does not make the coin roll off the table.

I second the card table idea. I do not use towels or anything, just the padded top works good.

I'd be more concerned about scratching the counter top.

Us landlords just LOVE reading things like this. Someone pays $500 a month in rent for a year and does $10,000 damage to the unit! I think everyone should own at least one rental property during their lifetime to see what it is like to be on the other side. OR, let me rent your most valuable coin for a year and have the attitude "it's just a rental, I don't own it"! LOL

I think that this qualifies as the first time on CCF I have heard someone express a concern about scratching something onther then the coin...

I think if the worst of the damages are a few scratches on the countertops from coins you are getting away pretty good.

MorganNoob, I am one of those pocket change collectors you hear about occasionally. You know, the ones who think "they're just coins" and have never handled a coin by its rims intentionally. Cotton gloves? HA! Coin tongs? Double HA!

Damage like that is only a risk if you make a habit of sorting Yap stone money on those granite countertops.

Kurt, do you think those coins in my pocket might make my pants fall down?

OT: Ok, I'll bite--who are these people and were they billed per their contract? When I leased a place, I actually did many repairs to the home and left it in better shape than at signing.

I think the real risk in sliding over wood/plastic is possible dust or grit on the surface that could abrade the coin. If the coins are circulated already, and the surface is clean, you should be OK (imo).
