After seen KurtS's awesome thread on that Ike error, I had to post this. It got me thinking about Mint employee intervention in some of these incredible errors. If this is not the product of a Mint employee, I don't know what is: http://www.byersnc.com/584857-014.htmlThis is one of the most interesting "errors" I have ever seen. swcoin.ecrater.com

If that is not a deliberate mint employee creation, then I would not know what was!

I think Byers has since sold this piece because I can't find it in his inventory any more. I believe it is unique. Pretty neat though

I can understand how they could make such a piece but how do they get it out of the mint? Isn't the security extremely high for the employees? Or do they just let it ride and see when it pops up on the news

Exactly. My brother recently took a tour of the Denver Mint (I want to go), and he said the employees can't bring anything metal in to work. They go through a detector wand upon arrival and when they leave. I think the security got a cut!

Maybe if you slice a finger off, they won't run all of the security on you as they're taking you to the hospital. The you can smuggle some errors out.

Quote: Or do they just let it ride and see when it pops up on the news That is my guess. It is like the hacker mentality; they do not do it for the money, but rather to see their "work" get press.

Did I confuse you? Or is that for Amazon's comment? Judging by the time stamp, I have to assume the latter! :
