I have found at least a half dozen of these pennies so I know it is common. My question is what is happening to cause a gap in either the top or bottom of the mint mark? this one has a gap in the top. I have found 1 or 2 with gap in both the top and bottom.

That is the normal look of a Ball serif Mintmark. The weak spot is at the top. It is when the weak spot is on the bottom on the 1946-S that it is inverted.

Thanks, because I was finding them so regularly I knew they could not be an error. I thought it was just a bad job making the mint mark. Good to know about the inverted mint marks.
