Might a genuine Pine Tree Shilling demonstrate attraction to a magnet? The seller reports: "I had the metal tested. It is a blend with some silver, but it is an alloy and has some magnetism."

Bidding appears lively on this ebay item; currently, closing in on a grand. The seller has 100% feedback. They now offer but one other item, a circulated 1920-D Lincoln Cent. Returns are NOT accepted, and this stipulation is often a red flag.

While the details are strong, the piece's surfaces suggest it may have been either a ground find or else a cast copy. IMHO, the latter is more likely, but what say y'all? Here are some closer pics ....

If you look at the sellers feedback, he has only sold one item. The rest of his
feed back is that of a buyer. I would ask why a coin like that hasn't been certified.
I would be a little wary unless it could be proven genuine.

This would scare me in raw condition. But that's why ebay thrives, yes?

Looks like a cast copy, some magnetism. Are 2 red flags not enough?

Apparently, not. As JimmyD pointed out, why is this alleged coin not certified? This is yet another red flag.

Absolutely fake with 100% certainty. Doesn't look anything like a genuine coin, has all the looks of being cast, sticks to a magnet and is double what it should weigh. The amazing thing is, even though the seller posted the weight and composition which totally rule out a genuine coin, people kept bidding on it. How can people who obviously know absolutely nothing about it, throw that kind of money at it?

This just looks way off, and I'm not a colonial collector. Some of the suggested listings under it are genuine graded examples and the details are just not the same. I feel bad for the poor sap that is going to win this at over $1k. Three cheers for the ebay money-back guarantee

Pine tree shilling would be .925 silver, would NOT be magnetic, would not be that round (planchets were cut from sheets by hand and trimmed to achieve proper weight), would be thin, and almost certainly would not have that cast appearing surface. Finally the weight standard for the NE, Willow, Oak and pine tree shillings was 4.66 grams, this one is 8.9 grams, more than twice the proper weight. It's a fake, fake, fake.
