I have this coin that looks strange and gold. I have not been able to find much about it online and hoping someone here can help me.
I have tested the coins metal for 18kt, 14kt and 10kt gold content and it came back as 10kt. I think, if anything it's plated not solid as it doesn't seem to weigh enough to be gold. It weighs 0.818 oz on a digital scale. I have photos of it alone and next to standard coins for comparison. Any info is appreciated, thanks.1978-Eisenhower-Dollar-Coin-That-Is-In-A-Yellow-Gold-Tone-And-Tested-10-Kt

It is just gold plated. A lot of these were plated; I have a few.

Thanks, any idea why they would be plated?

They plate them sometimes to make a few extra bucks off someone, or sometimes the plates will plate various coins as an example of their skill.

Mostly they do it so they can sell them for $9.99 - $14.99 and claim they are special issues on home shopping channels or catalogs.

I suppose if you are going to gold plate a coin go big or go home.

Many novelty companies will plate almost any coin to make it "stand out" from ones like it and then charge you a fat premium.

A quick google search will show you people, even now, trying to sell them.

https://www.americanmint.com/1971-1...tion=IG9S101

one can be yours for $9.95 with preview of future issues enrollment or just buy this one issue for the low low price of 14.95 *plus shipping and handling.

you get a $1 coin with 25 cents of gold plating on it. People buy it thinking it's cool, then when they are in a pinch spend them for $1 or take it to a coin shop where the proprietor will tell them to spend it.
I just flat out refuse to do business with companies that do this sort of thing. I'm not a fan of coins getting plated because it's damage and kills the numismatic value of what they plate just so they can make a quick buck.

They will even do a series, and a nice wooden collectors box and juice it even more. it rubs me the wrong way because people that buy them, when in a bind, go to try to sell it and get told it's worth face value and then they wind up in circulation found by someone then people come to the forums with platinum or gold plated coins thinking they struck it rich.

All around it's just bad for the hobby in general but the sellers of these items don't really care because they make their bucks.

Thanks everyone! I kinda knew they weren't going to be some big $$ find. Thank goodness I didn't buy them for $9.99 or more. I found them after a friend passed, he might have paid for them, so I kept them.
