I recently expanded my collection to coins that circulated in colonial Canada (i.e.in reasonable quantity (i.e. French, Spanish, British, American, etc).

I've developed my 'want list' primarily from the foreign section of Charlton along with a coin collecting book from Willey, however these sources list just the most popular coins. In addition, I have found many articles that have supported expanding my list.

I have two questions for the forum, and would appreciate any insight you could offer.

1) Could anyone recommend any other general sources for foreign coins circulating in Canada - for example does Haxby have a good section on this?

2) I have read several general references to Portuguese coins circulating in Canada, but have only seen specific mention of gold Moidores, 1/2 Joes, and Joes. It's also possible Brazilian 960 Reis (re-coined from Spanish dollars) circulated here. Does anyone have any detail on other Portuguese coins that likely circulated in Canada in reasonable quantity?

Thanks in advance.

Addressing your first question, you might find it useful to go through Numismatic Finds of the Americas (2009) by Kleeberg. It is essentially a compilation of hoard and single coin discoveries spanning the US, Canada, etc. There are several Canadian discovery sites listed there and they paint an interesting picture of what coins were circulating at both a local and regional level. I think that it can be downloaded for free off the internet.

Haxby's Canadian Coins and Tokens is great, as is charlton's Canadian Colonial Tokens 8th edition by W.Cross

If you search around the net you will come across the original breton catalogs and several others that are similar
