Environmental toning causing it to turn black.
The dings on the rims are damage, not errors.

Not seeing errors. Agree, the darkened appearance is the result of exposure to environmental agents. I go through many rolls of dimes now and then and see dimes like this on occasion.

Staining on a coin is pretty permanent. It wear off on the raised devices, but the fields, it takes a lot longer, unless polished off. Then the raised devices get polished away.
