I am back for some more education. I have a 2018 shield penny which has some doubling on the obverse. I am really trying to understand what to look for when challenged with a MD or DD decision. Any feedback is much appreciated.

In my newcomer opinion, this is Machine Doubling for the following reasons.

1.The full photo shows light doubling.

2. The zero in 2018 - the left side is thinner than the right.

3.The E in Liberty - the top horizontal line is thinner than the rest.

4. In God - The O looks the same as #2 and the bottom of the D looks thinner than the top.

5. WE - The W has doubling on both the top and the bottom points and the left line looks smaller than the rest. The E's bottom horizontal looks smaller than the top.

6. Trust - The bottom left inner curve of the U appears thinner than the opposite side.

7. The nose and forehead look doubled, but they also look like their size is smaller and pushed to the left.

Please tell me if this is an accurate analysis or if I am seeing things that are not there. Also please add any other indicators that I missed.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here's a link to Wexlers, see if you can find a match.

Unfortunately, the glare coming off the coin makes it difficult to determine what may be happening. If possible, please post a photo or two taken using diffused lighting. Thanks.

Also a single light source is better for micro photos because of creates light and shadows. Using two light sources takes away the shadows.

Note on this image. The light is coming at 12:00 and the shadow is a 6:00. Also not the shape of the devices. Your coin looks like overall the same size of devices. The example above is showing distorted devices. I use the illustration of an over inflated bicycle tube. Thus it looks distorted. I'm not seeing that on your images.

Thanks for the advice. Its the result of a cheap UBS microscope. I made some adjustments using 12:00 diffused light source. It made a significant difference. Let me know what you think please.

Great improvement. I'll have to make side by sides with a normal coin to see if they are larger. I'm not seeing it on the date.
Here are the images of a side by side of a normal coin:

Here are images with a normal coin your coin and Wexler's WDDO-001:

So it looks like it might be a minor DDO, but not a match on Liberty to WDDO-001. The IN GOD looked close, but with Liberty so different and the dates would also be different. So we might have to check some more to see if there is another die that will match?

Coop you are awesome. The comparisons are fantastic, and you have helped me tremendously. I will start using Wexler's to compare my coins too. I am still having trouble recognizing a DD vs MD, so I have much work to do.

Thank you!!!

Well click on this link of when I type in CoopHome, Note it turns blue. It will take you to a thread of different topics answered, and Machine Doubling is mentioned several time. There are now 6 pages and I'm adding to it daily now. If you get on page one, move over to page two, as I update the subjects from page one, on page two. I cover different subjects and times I cover it several times, and try to make the explanation a bit different every time. You will be reading this section for hours on ends. With thousands of images. You just don't know what answers you will find answered there.
