I pretty sure it is not caused by annealing on this coin. On an black beauty the metal turns that color. If worn, I feel they surface color would remain the same. As the metal color is changed, not a coating on the coin. Kink of like a Woody cent cent, coin wear does not weaken the planchets wood coloring. It is part of the metal, not something on the metal.

Environmental staining/toning/discolouration/damage. As mentioned, could be from being buried in soil for a long period, or a split second from a blow torch. Damage can come from a million ways, but the one thing that is certain is this dime did not leave the mint looking like this. Post mint damage ( PMD). We see a lot of similar coins.

Silver turns black when oxidized. Is it supposed to be a silver dime?

@ AmateurCoinGuy, only few things can make the silver been black. The main it is an toxin combinated with acids in human body who have leaver problems. This is very well explained in the medical resources. Environmental could affect only if the contamination is high sulfuric elements which it is not really to find or have, except if you do not work in sulf mine or sulfuric product production.

This coin is not that dark. I will go more through a dirty coin in humid slow dry environment. Boiling in Borax could clean, if not boiled in boric acid will brink back.

PS No 1968 silver dime, so? No opinion
