Does not surprise me one bit although it is sad. I have always said insurance-insurance-insurance! When I buy coins on ebay, 9 times out of 10, the seller prefers Paypal even though I don't but, the seller almost always allows you to opt for insurance. This is a wise policy weather you buy or sell coins. This will not stop some crook like this from stealing your items but, at least you'll get your money back. Keep in mind, it is the USPS. It may take a while through all the red tape to get your funds back.

I thought postal insurance for coins was not honored. It's happened to me several times, so I no longer bother with insurance, since they did not honor claims. They told me that coins are not covered.

I also wonder whether this is the tip of the iceberg- many coin packages go missing each year.

The Postal service insures collectible coins, but not cash or checks.

Oh. Then I guess they were just lying to me so they wouldn't have to pay the claim? The last several years I have not been getting insurance on any coins I buy or sell, unless the other party requires it.

Bingo!... I can say this is a fact when importing coins from the US into Canada. After 8 months of form filling, document providing, emails, phone calls and b.s.(*don't pardon my english) I received a letter of claim denial. (me><them... <crowd)
Was it a coin or bullion? Under the postal option chosen, a China 5 Yuan bullion coin(1/20 oz gold) is a coin because of the legal tender denomination... importation of coins is not covered. The coin is issued by definition as bullion, which is not insureable under the other mailing options.(*huh... me><them)
It's a lose - lose situation... as any insurance often tends to be for most consumers.(fly the flames )
I have most purchases sent regular mail(if at all possible)... not just because this tends to bypass customs(hey, I don't mind paying what's due. I figure all that when buying), but because it keeps my stuff out of the hands of the possibly incompetant(?) or plain thieves(I thought the p.o. paid well?).
My sister is an insurance broker... she is not allowed to talk business in my home. It has been that way since I've had a home. I will not get into the abhorration that I/friends/family have experienced with insurance companies in the past.
Insurers continue to profit in this economic downturn.
... see you got me all riled up now... ooohhhmmm, ooohhhmmm, ooohhhmmm

hmm... so to synthesize for my own need, insurance is mostly covering domestic shipments?

And has anyone gone through the process of filing a claim for insurance down in the states?

For my current auction, what should I do? I thought of just printing a label and purchasing the insurance for the bubble mailer, but is that enough?
Rest in Peace

Insurance is mostly a fool's game. Unless you lose about 1 out of 10 shipments, of course. Tppical loss rates are closer to a 1 in 1000 so you're paying what, $1650 for a $50 loss? Forget saving money on Geico, don't insure anything under $50.
