Picked up this real nice MS grade (IMHO) 1887P Vam3A Elite CD 'Misty"
the end of Sept.

In re-examining the coin, I noticed this dark spot between the 4th and 5th star on the obverse. It looks like Verdigris?- NO! PVC Damage (Thanks for the correction Seated Nut!)

Questions- as far as options, if this is PVC Damage and not toning,

1.Would a good "ACETONE" soak remove it?

2.Would it be ok to send in "as is", to a TPG or would they reject it etc. (ANACS)

3. Just leave it as is. ( I only paid $28.00 for the coin )

chuckster,

You've been hanging around those "copper guys" too long. Verdigris is a copper affliction. This may be PVC damage that was treated in the past. Go ahead and give it the pure acetone treatment and see if any of it comes off. Don't attempt to rub/scratch it off or use dip. If it doesn't come off, it may just be the start of some toning. Nice pick up!

Thanks Dave!

Corrected my post.

If this doesn't come off, would it grade as is, or don't bother to send it in as I would be wasting money?

I've seen worse looking coins in slabs (PCGS, NGC). I recently had a 1917 Walker returned in a body bag due to PVC, but that was an active spot. Others here may have definite opinions. Your call.

I think it may grade. However, it appears to be an AU coin, not an MS (picture seems to indicate wear on Liberty's face and the eagle's breast). It is always difficult to accurately grade based on pictures only. I would not consider it worth the money and time for grading.

I would strongly urge you to leave the coin alone.
