As a "newbie" I am totally lost on this one. As shown in the photo, there is an error next to Lincoln's bowtie that I can only describe as "extra material?" I am hoping to learn what kind of error/variety it is and what caused it to happen. Thank you and have a great day!

A classic '56 Philly Wheat cent. Has what appears to be an early stage cracked skull (die crack(s)), a die deterioration-induced Ridge Ring on the obverse (raised arc running through IGWT), and a die crack coming off the right wheat stalk. I'll wait for others to come along and share thoughts on the bow tie.

Decent photos too.

A die chip it is! So that area of the die broke off allowing for the material to take and fill that spot as no die was present to stamp it into the shape it was supposed to be? That made sense to me but does that make sense to you? I would have thought there would have been much more visible damage to the surrounding area. Thank you for the education!

Appreciate the mention about the photos. I am still having trouble with the lighting being so bright.

That is the second one I saw today, a chip in same position.. Now I have to go hunt it down..

Edit:
Here it is, not an exact match, but the location is similar, BUT both are 1956.
Is this a known chip on numerous coins or until just now a random die chip on 1956 Lincoln Cents? Did I just find and/or associate an error previously unknown? (probably not but nice to dream)

It's a common die chip from that one 1956 die - you can find examples of it from the start and then into yours getting bigger - I have one that is an earlier die state

In the 1969 edition of "THE CLASSIFICATION AND VALUE OF ERRORS ON THE Lincoln Cent" by Jean Cohen there are listings for what she called "DIEBREAKS AT TIE".

Starting on page 272 there 41 listings for die chips on the tie for the 1956 cent. Your die chip matches some of the markers for 56-T34 on page 274.
