I'm very excited! I just found this while searching through a box of nickels today. I wish it wasn't so beat up and dirty, but I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. I like the Westward Journey nickels so I was looking for this one specifically, but I don't check most nickel dates for varieties.

The first picture is a normal 2004-P nickel just for comparison under the same lighting/camera. Just want to make that clear so people don't think I'm crazy.

Sorry for the picture quality; I'm still using the ghetto loupe+camera phone setup.

Normal 2004-P:

Doubling most obvious in the last of the "W" and the serif on "S" in "WE TRUST", but also noticeable in other letters and the eye area:

Doubling clear in the "ERTY" of "LIBERTY":

Date:
2004-P-Jefferson-Nickel-DDO-Peace-Reverse!

Wide views to show condition (a bummer):

2004-P-Jefferson-Nickel-DDO-Peace-Reverse!

Some Googling suggests that this is listed as CONECA DDO-001 (Single Squeeze), Crawford: CDDO-001, Wexler: WDDO-001.

Here's Ken Potter's article on this doubled die, with pictures.

I've made a picture showing the regular 2004-P (left) next to the one I found (right).

Your side-by-side photos make it real easy to see the difference.
I'm no expert here, but it sure resembles the DDO in that article.
The thickening is pronounced, and look at the bottom stroke on ER in LIBERTY.
The star is also distorted. DDO to my eyes too--nice find!

I hear ya--I'm skeptical first, but the thickness/doubling is really conclusive, imo.
It's cool that such a nice DDO can be found on coins this recent--I'm gonna check this date now.

It's a fun date to check because the special reverse makes it easy to pull out and set aside without squinting when you're going through rolls of nickels. The discovery pieces for this variety were found near my neck of the woods, so I have high hopes for finding a nicer condition one if I just keep looking. It's actually gotten me more excited about nickels, so I'm gonna expand my list of dates to check.

indeed.

I never would have seen it ... but your side by side make it clear.

Great score ... and indeed great eyes.

That split serif on the bottom arm of the "E" in WE tipped me off! Nice find.

Cool!

I was like

Then some people wrote what to look for and I was like

Then I looked again and saw the bottom of the S and thought "hmm..."

Then someone said about the thickness and now I'm like

I found another one! It's in much better condition (still a few nicks and scratches), though it looks like a later die state because some of the features aren't as crisp. But still, !

Oh crap, I just made my rare coin less rare...

I'm gonna keep looking for this one until I find a cherry one in an early die state.
