Those separation lines in the date and the "TR" in TRUST tells the difference between a regular and a DDO like you have presented. I'm not an expert, but this is how I see your coin.

I've found more of these, so I roped my buddy with a DSLR and a macro lens to take some pictures of them for side-by-side comparison. The first in each composite image is a regular non-doubled 2004-P, then the rest are the six examples of this DDO that I've found, in no particular order (I've since found a seventh). You can see the varying die state of each coin. For instance, compare the appearance of the serif on the "4" in the date. I think the die was polished down significantly at one point, reducing the appearance of the doubling. Unfortunately, I never got a lighting setup that I was all that happy with, but hopefully this illustrates the variety.

Wow I'm impressed at how many you found! You may have enough to catalog the progression of die states. That settles it; I'm picking up a bunch at the bank. Since I'm 2500 miles away--our search areas won't overlap.

Do you know how many of these I've looked at and then spent? Now I have to go back to every store I've visited in the last 10 years and get my nickels back. This is gonna take a while. Great post with great pictures! Thanks for the info.

I can finally see it in your second coin. Still tuff to see. Wonder how many I've let slip by.

I see it fairly easy in the letters you point out but the eye I just can't see a doubling. Can you point it out ? Thanks !

I've finished taking some higher quality photos. Unfortunately, even though I've found about 20 of these, they've all been mid-to-late die state. This is probably my best one. EDS examples are known, but they seem scarce, and I think they went to a different part of the country. 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr The doubling is quite clear on the date, with thicker digits and clear notching on the star, "2" and "4". 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr Doubling is also pretty clear on "LIBERTY", with clear notching on the E and R. 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr Doubling is very subtle on "GOD" most noticeable on the dodad on the G, but very hard to see as it gets to later die states. 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr Doubling is more clear on all letters of "WE TRUST", particularly on the thin strokes of "W" and "U and the notching on the bottom of the "S". 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr The mintmark is noticeably distorted, and the "FS" initials are probably the surest pick-up-point. 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr 2004-P Jefferson nickel "Peace Medal" DDO by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr

I find the date and mint mark images the best evidence. Very nice finds. You may have lived in the area where these were released? (when this die was found, it was felt that there were no hubbed doubled die possible because of the single squeeze die process. This one was the one that started everyone look for them from that point onward) Added:I'm glad to see others using the side by side images. They do help to see the differences better than way.
