I searched CCF for posts about coin rolls that "look" old, but only found very old posts - so here it goes. I apologize if I missed a more recent post. I am dubious of acquiring rolls that look old, especially on trading sites like ebay. Is there some good info on CCF already about weeding out "fake" old rolls? I already do things like research any names on wrappers, but realize they could be added later to sweeten a sale, or wrappers can be deliberately frayed to look older, too. Any advice is appreciated. Stay well, Diy89Nurm7

I'd be highly skeptical about any old roll, especially an old "unsearched" roll. Let's say you found an old roll of coins in Grandpa's sock draw after he passed on. Who wouldn't open it and look through it? Who would just put it on ebay unsearched saying "hey, here's your lucky chance"?

there are many semi older rolls that are truly still original , going back past 1964.. mostly.. In canada and the usa they sent mint bags to the banks and they rolled their own rolls... If you want to believe that their are still original dollar rolls or half dollar rolls , earlier than these dates.. Like Peace dollar or morgans, the chances are near zero.. you will find the older rolls of franklins.. but again be carefull..

Glad to hear others are skeptical, too. I see so many supposed wheatie rolls with an unexpected coin on the end. Usually the wrapper end is so frayed or disturbed that someone could easily insert a coin there to drive the price up on an otherwise average roll of wheaties. Why wouldn't the seller keep that surprise coin and/or the whole roll in the first place?

Just buy 'em all is my advice. Even if they check the roll after Grandpa passes, it may not mean much as 9 of 10 non collectors don't know the difference. That's part of the reason I found a few dozen solid silver rolls in the five years that I was hunting. I'd leave the house with a couple grand in cash and drive until it was all spent. Ah, those were the days.
