Hello All. Looks like a MACK Truck ran over all of them when I look under the scope. I purchased 1968-1981 1984-1999 P + D BU Jefferson nickels Mint Cello Set Run (60 coins) someone parted out nickels in their original sealed mint packs. I very carefully exacto knifed (one side of the package allowing me to push the coins through) the plastic carefully handling the coins only to find tuns of nicks, scratches, dents, and dings. Most of them didn't even have steps. Is this the normal expectation from NEW MINT SETS? IF so, I'm going to light up a 2-hour (6x60) cigar tomorrow when searching through the rest!

Best to assume that mint sets of that age have already been picked over for the "best" examples...If your looking to fill an album I would suggest visiting a coin shop or coin shows in your area to examine them in person.
Also most mint set of that era contained regular made for circulation coinage (no special care taken in their packaging)...Now proof sets are a different story

to CCF...good luck on future finds, have fun

Side-note for new collectors...buy the book before buying the coin...learn grading so you can cherry-pick the best from ebay....take a look at PCGS.com/photograde.....

Yes, back in the day mint sets were assembled from coins poured into containers, where employees could pull them out and put the packets together. The coins weren't lovingly carried by hand, one-by-one, from the striking chamber to the cello machine. And these were coins which were well-jostled in bulk before making it to the packet packing station. Yes, most of the better appearing sets have been consumed--meaning the less desirable stuff makes up most of what's left. I've gone through 100s of sets over the years and have seen coins which look like they were pulled from cash registers.

Thanks for the replies and advice. I'm lucky because I did find 3 coins with borderline FS. I compared the FS images from PCGS and it looks very close with a small nick in the steps. Now the whole dilemma of sending the best one-off to be graded. Yikes!

Sorry to hear about this frustration - I've been weary about such a situation and lament the fact that it's happened to someone else. Keep hunting!
