do you think it is over kill to put common or lower grade wheat cents, silver Roosevelt dimes and a complete set of Jefferson nickels in air tites.

I recently put my VF - AU wheat's in airtites. More less to keep my binder looking formal :) I don't think its really necessary though. Also, anything to protect the coin better IMO isn't overkill :)

I would say it is overkill for the simple fact that the airtite will cost more than some of the coins you describe are worth.

2x2's in folders or tubes are my suggestions.

Dude, they are yours and if you got the cash, then put them into what ever you want. I would go with the 2x2's myself.

I agree with the others who say do what makes you happy. It's your collection after all, so if you want to display them that way, that's up to you. I have too many wheats to display them all...roughly 6000 or so, so most are sitting in boxes/tubes sorted by decade.

I think it's a mathematics question.

If you shop around and buy in lots, you can get air-tites for 0.30 - 0.40 each. 2x2's cost me 0.03 - 0.04 a piece.

I have a few coins that have lived in several different 2x2's. It really would have cost me almost the same to have put them in an air-tite from the beginning and be done with it.

Now if you put a coin in a 2x2 and never change it's clothing, than there is no economic argument.

Another factor is if you have kids and like to show your coins off. In that case, you can let almost anyone play with the air-tite all day long whereas a coin in a 2x2 could get damaged by an energetic 8-year old.

If I have an "interesting" coin that I know I'm gonna want to handle, I immediately put it in an air-tite to protect the coin from me.

It depends on how long you want to store the coins for. Airtites are very, very safe and you can be assured your coins won't tone or develop corrosion. Plus, if you upgrade you can always pry an Airtite back open.
