Hello all this is my first post, I was going through my old wheat pennies and found this. I can't find anything in the internet about it, it led me here. Is this a planchet error and what does that mean?

If you don't know what a planchet error is, your coin probably isn't. (A planchet error is where the wrong metal blank was mistakenly used). What question might you have about this coin that made you question things at all? In general we like to see both sides of your coin, and closeups of areas of interest, so can you please show us the reverse side of your coin? Where did you get it, and what does the coin mean to you? What questions might you have that we can answer for you?

to the CCF! We'd love to see what other coins you might have! (one per thread, please)

to the CCF!

please post both sides of the coin.

From what I see on the coin, it looks like Post Mint Damage. PMD. The last 5 may have been distorted by a vending machine (gum ball machine ?) The damaged, displaced metal is parallel to the rim. The coin may have been pushed through the mechanism with enough force to shear and displace the metal of the 5.

Nothing that I know of in the minting process could cause this.

Agree with yokozuna. Metal displaced by mechanical. A close look show the original strike of the 5.

Thank you for defining planchet error and post mint damage. It was the five that caught my eye and prompted me to ask. Thank you for explaining.

Yes, the 5 fell victim to a mechanical device--likely an old school vending machine many, many years ago. We see these with some frequency on the CCF forum.
