Anyone know what this might be? I noticed there was rough spots on both the east and west sides of the coin. I got it under the scope and it's crazy looking. Then when I was cropping the picture of the full obverse I noticed there's a line almost looks like it's a cut on Jefferson's top part of his head. That is definitely not a scratch. I don't know if it's significant but that was odd too. Thoughts?

"Weird starburst lines" are what's called die flow lines, they are created as the die ages.

Jefferson definitely got a Craniotomy on this one from a major hit on his forehead from something, who knows what....definitely PMD. The lines and rough spots you see are just what Greasy mentioned, flow lines. They are cause by a deteriorated die. The older and more used a die is the more it will show these flow lines. For some reason it seems to be much more obvious and visible on Jefferson nickels than other coins in my opinion.

Would love to have a close-up look of an old, worn die taken out of production.
