Folks, I have the attached Wheat penny with what I would describe as a "mesh" covering, mostly on the obverse. Comments please and a grade estimate? Thanks. Bill

What a beauty! That looks like what we call "wood grain." It occurs when the alloy isn't perfectly mixed and some patches of light-colored, tin/zinc-rich metal are stretched out as the sheet is rolled. Take good care of that one! As for the grade, clearer pictures might be necessary.

Agree, alloy issue which yields a woody appearance. I have several early wheat cents with very similar mesh-like characteristics. Nice find. Better images--larger and sharper--needed to support a decent grade estimate. As it stands at the moment, I'd think MS63+. Hope to see improved pics.

All, In doing some web searches on "woodies", I saw some one directional "brush" lines that were described as "woodies." I know I have several like that--I have to go back through pennies I marked to check on. As I remember, some were in fairly high grades. It will probably take some time, but I will post photos if/when I locate them. I'm not going to list the 1918 for sale on ebay or elsewhere until I do some additional research, but I would welcome any ideas as to value. Thanks. Bill

It's hard to grade this coin with all that wood grain showing but a collector of early wheat woodies would surely gobble this one up . I don't think it's TPG , however a nice raw coin for the Bay .

This is a tough one to grade since the wood grain can hide marks. That said, I'm thinking it looks better than 63.

I was just looking through a tube of LWC's I had marked dbl ck...out of all...2 in there that were woodies. One of them was a lighter color butterscotch w/the darker grain appearance...as I looked at it I thought...what would a RD or RB example look like? Now I know!! Great example and Thanks for sharing! smat

woody collectors will be drooling over this one however it does make it difficult to grade as the surfaces are so camouflaged. my best guess would be in the MS65RB range

All--Very helpful. In examining the coin close up (even with my limited experience), I think it's at least a 64+. Although I am still researching woodies, I have no idea what price I should think about if/when I put it on ebay. I would appreciate some suggestions from you experts. T-BOP, why not a TPG? Thanks. Bill

It would cost more to grade it than you would get out if it. It's not a cheap process.
Having said that, the coin is a beauty! I'd love to have that in my woody collection!
