Bigger is Better? Does this age old question apply to round medals?

Going through my collection I found the following medals;

Addressograph Multigraph, 25 year service medal in bronze 101.2 mm.

Brandenburg Prussia, marriage medal 1668 silver 85.5 mm

Steel Founders Society of America, Lorenz medal gold 60mm.

Size is determined by the way the coin or medal is intended used, not by the commemorative subject.

If the medal becomes extremely large, it may be referred to as a plaque, not a medal. Even in this case the size sd determined by it's intended use.

Often, there are artistic reasons why a medal size may be decided upon, where the restrictions caused by circulation are removed, such as size, height of relief (the need to be stacked).
Crown sized NCLT coins are a kind of 'halfway house'.
Thus, medals are considered more of a pure artform than coins are, and can allow completely different methods of manufacture which leads to wider artistic license in all sorts of ways that coins cannot.

Medals do not suffer the legislative restrictions that coins do.

That bigger is better is only one of many considerations when a medal is being designed.

I think that rarity combined with subject matter, quality of art, age, demand, composition and artist are more important. Sometimes there are various sizes with the same composition and design and then bigger one is usually better.
There are big medals that aren't worth a lot and others that are. Generally size isn't a major factor on it's own.

In my experience its the subject matter and historical relevance that matter most in driving price.
