I am going through the pennies that I set aside that looked interesting viewed through a USB Digital scope. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the doubling on this coin through the stereoscope. I'm still a newbie but the doubling looked obvious even though the coin is in bad shape. I tried to find a match through Wexler and Coppercoins but I am not experienced enough to make a definite match. Your thoughts are appreciated.

What is your "educated guess" to what number it might match?

This is unfortunately just Machine Doubling, which is caused when the die shifts slightly during the strike. The devices are partially flattened rather than widened.

Is it possible that since this coin is 49 years old that the devices were flattened due to circulation wear? Under the stereoscope the bottom of the 9, 7, and 2 look rounded however the tops have been hit giving them a flat appearance.

When the affected areas follow the design, then it is Machine Doubling. But other events could happen also. The nose looks like it took a hit, while the other areas are showing MD. But when the date and the mintmark show the same direction, that is a clincher for MD. Not a DDO.

1972S-1DO-002 is the closest because of the 7 and 2 in the date. Most of the others the date was not mentioned, and it does not look like the other examples with a date.

That reads like a clincher statement. I will never forget this line.

Unless it is dated 1990 or newer. Just a hint: a 18% gray scale background works best.

Thanks for the tip John1. I know I can make it gray but 18% would be just a guess with my current software.

Keep in mind that year for the MDD. That is probably what he is seeing on this one:

Thanks for the hint John1. I just found out what an 18% background means.
