I recently picked up this uncirculated 1880-cc
It was listed as GEM!!
Pictures were good & I was excited to receive it. Upon areival I unboxed it & grabbed my loupe.
My heart sank when I was lots of very fine marks on the recessed areas of both the obverse & reverse.
Other than that it looks like it was minted yesterday?
What are these fine marks from?
I dont know wether I should return it or keep it.
I love the coin but I feel that these marks ruin it?
Is it just in my head or am I justified?
Thanks

What does the reverse look like? May be evidence on the obverse of a not-too-subtle cleaning.

I'd return that one as well. It's a Details, cleaned coin at this point.

And I'm going to be "that guy"... if it were gem, it would now have a nice fingerprint on it from resting on your fingers.

The reverse has the exact same marks in all recessed areas..

The seller is coinman_2000
He is rude, ignorant & just doesn't care!!
He purposely tried to be deceptive 100%.
He has a good profile rating but a hanful of people said the same thing I did.
He offered a refund but the fact that he tried to pass this after claiming 25 years in business is what really makes me mad.
I wasnt sure if I should keep it even with the marks.
Paid $500

Ah yes, Coinman_2000. His 'activity' has been broached before on this forum. I look at his stuff now and then, but that's it. Not saying the seller is evil, just me exercising free will.

Search for 'coinman_2000' within the coin community forum.

Seller may argue that this scrub job with Comet is really die polishing lines.....

I could understand die polishing lines if they were all uniform and in the same direction, But they are not...

It looks like it was purposely done, Possibly with a dremmel tool, Or some type of device used for detail polishing. All the marks are in the recessed areas on both sides and do not touch any of the raised areas such as the stars, face or Eagle.
It just boggles my mind why anybody would even try to do such a thing with such a beautiful coin, That is obviously completely uncirculated... It literally breaks my heart

Just to clarify I'm not stating that coin coin_2000 did this himself
But what I am saying is for somebody that's been in business for 25 years these marks should have been extremely obvious as they were visible with the naked eye. To list it as a gem and not even mention this in the description is being deceptive

The coin has been harshly cleaned. Send it back for a refund. When you receive a coin from a seller, it is best to inspect the coin in the original holder/container/flip until you are certain that you want to keep the coin. If you are going to handle a collectable coin without a glove, hold the coin on the edge between your fingers. Try not to touch the details of the coin with your fingers. Fingerprints where you touch the coin, can and do tone into the surface.

Your 100% absolutely right..
I was so annoyed & to top it off he shipped in in a ripped plastic bag.
Not even a holder!
No insurance only tracking..
But your right!!
This guy clearly doesn't care.
I can absolutely get a refund 100% I have already put in for it..
I appreciate everybody's responses... It's just too badd that some people don't have the integrity that the majority of the people in the numeristic community do..

A few things
1 Return it it is harshly cleaned
2 learn how to handle coins properly
3 You have no idea if it was insured or not
when you use Stamp.com or Pirate ship
or any other platform to ship
it does not show on the label .

I dont know why you just assumed you had an answer?
Little premature, ya think?

I asked him & he said he would not insure it but he would add tracking because I asked. He wasn't even gonna put tracking on it!
The guys a !
He ships a "Gem" in a plastic bag!! Thats professional?
