Hi, I found some coins and noticed one had an odd sawtooth edge. Admittedly, I know nothing about currency. I could not find anything online about it so thought I'd try here.

Sadly, just a badly damaged coin at this point. Someone was attempting to do who knows what with either a file or rotary tool. This was the end result. Its what is referred to as PMD (post mint damage).

@grd, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with this being the product of idle hands. In the past, we have seen such work on cents that were transformed into pastry cutter wheels, but those had a central hole added.

First,

Speculating here. One possibility is that it may have been cut to approximate the spacing of teeth in a gear or the spacing of links in a chain. It could have been used to scrape dirt or gunk from the gear or chain. Another possibility is that it was used to save thread or string, by wrapping it around the notched coin.

Old copper coins were often used by machinists to hone their skills or to contrive some useful device. There are some collectors out there, seeking curious coins like this, but they're few in number.
