Picked up this 1883 S Morgan dollar recently and it seems pretty gorgeous. It looks like it has die/file lines on the fields on the obverse and reverse. No scratches like that are on any of the details so I think its die scratches vs cleaning scratches. Anyone have any thoughts? You can sort of see the lines in the Obverse picture. Worth sending in to get encapsulated?

I would enjoy it but not encapsulate it. It looks cleaned to me, particularly from the lines on the left side and the texture on the cheek. It looks eaten away.

Can you show us a couple more obverse pics from different angles?

Just took some pictures from a different angle as from suggested and it looks like the scratches do go across the cheek. I don't think die marks would go across the devices as well right? That kind of sucks. I also am taking pictures with a cell phone camera and it is terrible at capturing luster. It does have full luster I wish I was better at capturing it. I always fail to.

Any chance its die polish lines? The only place other than the fields that I see lines is that area on the cheek. Doesn't seem to be on devices or lettering. I'm pretty sure it is cleaned though. It has a surprising amount of luster compared to other cleaned coins I have seen though. Still pretty nice. Maybe I'll just throw it in an album.

Die polish lines are raised above the surface of the coin because they are "into" the surface of the die. Cleaning lines are into the surface of the coin because the abrasives that were used on the coin scratched the surface.
The coin does look cleaned as the lines seem to run across her cheek also.

That's disappointing. I guess into a dansco album it goes!

AU details. cleaned/polished/whizzed. doesn't really matter.
just a tip, if possible post here prior to purchase until you get a good handle on reading the surfaces. we are here to help you not lose money.
on this coin the original luster has been removed. although it looks like luster its actually from the cleaning/polishing. there is a dullness to the fields and its consistent across the entire obverse. if you look at the chin right where it meets the neck you can see the mirror like surface indicating polishing of some type. another indicator where you can see what the cleaning did is look at the stars on the left side. the highest points are dull without luster. hope that helps.
