It could be the lighting but the surfaces have an unusual shine to them. That would suggest this quarter has been plated to me.

Silver quarters were produced at San Francisco, not Denver like this one, so I don't think a silver quarter with D mintmark error is actually possible

PNWType nailed it. Plated with a reflective metal (something other than silver, I think).

On your last shot of the edge (reeds), there might be a bit of the copper core peeking through the post-mint plating of unknown origin.

I think what you have is one of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of State Quarters that were plated and then sold off by the TV shopping programs. When the poor unfortunate buyers trys to sell their "treasures" they find out they are only worth face value and they eventually get spent.

The State Quarters were plated with gold and platinum. I have a few that were originally as @Conder101 described. Platinum plating would look like what you have there.

They did silver plated ones as well.

A few years ago the treasurer of one of the local coin clubs was getting quarters at the bank for his wife's craft business and received three full rolls of gold plated State Quarters. Sold them to the club for face value and we used them for door prize giveaways for a long time.
