Hi all

I found a 1988 penny with an odd mark on it and am asking you, "the pros", what this is (and is called). It is a sort of "ridge" that goes from LIBERTY up to about WE.

Agree, Ridge Ring, a form of Die Deterioration.

I looked at that link, but only one photo looks like that section. Most of the linked-to pics show letters being effected. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Ah yes, the ridge ring--tell-tale sign of Die Deterioration.

AHA, now THAT one shows it... it all its glory!!! And it even shows a 1988 coin!

"... here the field portion of the die has retreated and this has resulted in the..." thinning of IN GOD WE TRUST, though on mine the letters seems pretty sharp.

So just another coin that looks interesting but not special. Oh well, I may keep it anyway.

:-)

It is very common to find these on the 1980's Zincolns. They are not a premium coin, but something to show to a new collector of what not is a premium coin. Spend and you will probably wish you had saved it. Or even if you have great images, they could also be used for this purpose.
