I'm thinking this might be PMD, but then again, this rim "issue" is in the same spot as most Cuds on 1959-D (although this is a 1959-P). Also wondering what happened on the obverse upper left where some zinc appears to show through.

Just a damage coin. These were not plated as they were copper planchets until 1982 when they had copper planchet and copper plated zinc cents that year.

Thanks Coop. I know it wasn't copper plated zinc, I was just wondering if the bronze (5% Zn) had something wonky going on there.

NO, the alloy has nothing to do with your coin. Seem to be altered after strike. I do not see no symptoms of alloy or planchet defaults. Also in the first and fifth photos you can see some molding alloys on the coin. Sorry no strike error or variety. Keep search, one day you will find.

Simply post mint damage ( PMD). Keep searching!
