I found several 2000 Massachusetts State Quarters in an uncirculated roll, with silver looking streaks in the same spots on the coins. The streaks appear to start at the 4 o'clock position and end at the 9:o'clock position. They are all in the same position on the coin which make me wonder about the marks. I reckon they are about 1/16" wide by about 3/16" long. They run through the islands at the 4 o'clock position. There is a small part that comes out of the left side of the state. at the 9o'clock position. Any information or theories would be appreciated. I have been unable to find any information or anything that looks like this on coins. There are 4 coins shown in one of the pictures to show how the shiny silver streak looks.     |

I see the dis-colorization your wondering about (involving the Island nearest the rim at 4k). My only explanation would be a possible Struck Through Grease issue on the obverse die. Lets see what others think....   to CCF good luck on future finds, have fun and keep asking when needed...  |

I see this type of "discoloration" a lot of the time on ZINC Lincoln Memorial Cents, not coppers and not Shields. I'm not seeing any resemblance of struck through on these quarters due to the design elements being undisturbed best as I can tell from the pics. I am not sure what the exact cause is and what makes these small areas shiny, typically adjacent to the rim, but would like to know why.

I have no idea what could have caused this, but I agree that it must have happened at the mint... seems too specific and coincidental to be PMD. |

to CCF I would love to see a much closer shot of this anomaly It's strange how it surrounds the small island by the rim without touching it. Makes me think the die got abraded somehow right over the incused island (from the die's perspective). Edited by Dearborn

Grease/oil on the fields with grit in the mixture. Not a much of a premium for this. It is more a distraction to someone who wants a normal coin. But there were all done by the same machine.

I appreciate all your comments. I will try to add a couple of better pictures. I kind of don't think it was Struck Through Grease, because of the number I have from 2 rolls, and I still have 4 more roll to search. I'm a total newby at searching for errors, although I have been fooling with coins off and on for years. Thanks again. Skip |
