I doubt if these coins have been anywhere near the Cook Islands either. If every coin collector took all their "legal tender" Cook Islands coins to the country tomorrow, I'm afraid the islands would sink under the sea from the weight...
But some nice colorful pieces have been issued in their name - I've got some myself, though not these Egyptian ones!

Thx Rob. So they are just junk?
Bearing in mind I actually pay attention to your advice. Less so for others.

They are not junk, because they are silver and well made items. Someone would have paid real money for these (Precious metal coins always cost way more than metal value).

Just that the Cook Islands is a flag of convenience, meaning that they will issue coins called NCLT (Non circulating legal tender) that celebrate themes not relevant to the country concerned and often deal with themes like Ancient societies, American movie and music stars, Animals, Rocks, Food and brand name items etc. Basically the coin equivalent of "Thematic" or "Wallpaper stamps". They are aimed at collectors of that theme (In this case Ancient Egypt, a respectable theme but popular due to several low quality History channel type documentaries about Egypt was settled by aliens from space etc and also low quality movies like the Mummy series).

Not surprisingly most of this stuff is actioned by American companies and mints and its American collectors likely to pay many times face and metal value for this stuff. It is often promoted as collectable and seldom has a secondary market. Also known as Granny Bait.

The Cook Islands is one of the very worst nations for this junk like a recent pair of coins showing the Peace Tower which were promoted to grannies everywhere as gold, but in fact like 0.23 of a single percent gold. Another very bad nation for this stuff is Tristan da Cunha, in which Bradford Mint (The king of granny baiters) is promoting overpriced gilt gold "crowns" of for like $90 each NZ money now.

The Cook Islands uses the NZ dollar as its in semi independence with us (We deal with their foreign affairs, but the self government has chosen poorly for agencies to market their collector's coinage and stamp issues) and they have a currency of everyday coins, almost no one would use this garbage in everyday use as the face value is way below the metal value and even further below its cost.

I hope this helps.

You got me on that one! Loved it!

Just don't forget to keep a lot of cats around and you should be OK.

Anyway...junk?

It depends on what YOU like. Some people just enjoy things like this for what they are while realizing these items are not mainstream coin collectibles...just coins made as novelty items for people to enjoy.

The Canadian mint ( RCM) has gone to making a ridiculous amount of artsy items nowadays to profit from people who would otherwise not look at the RCM's coins. They even made a miniature spinning merry-go-round and called it a coin!

While general numismatists are not interested in items such as this, and somewhat disappointed with the RCM, there must be people buying the stuff or the RCM would abandon the market.

Will your Egyptian themed coins ever be worth a lot of money? Probably not.

But remember Beanie Babies?

Another good indicator - check ebay SOLD item like yours.

Thx Earli42. I do but try. I start the day with good intensions. It just always lasts too long.

I have 3 Cats and a little Jackhund dog.
You summed it up. The things I have discovered that really are just things made to be collectable - often by people who dont really get its just junk.
I have looked and looked and most of it is .999 Silver.
I guess my dad just wanted me to have something that regardless can be melted.

Thanks for ruining my day Earle42. I find the "coins" shaped like countries and other bizarre shapes annoying enough but a merry-go-round takes the biscuit. I didn't believe it and had to google it to see it with my own eyes. What next, a toaster? Why not a car so you can drive your coin to work. Aargh....
