Is this just wishful thinking or is this doubling on the date?

If you are looking for a doubled die, your looking in the right spot, but not really. On the DDO's on the date area the spread is on the devices, not on the outside edges of the devices.

See the '8' has a spread on the DDO. On your coin, the devices are like the normal one, the DDD is to the right on your coin. So the lower image is showing where to look for the doubling. Note the outer loop/loops on the '8' is where the spread is. Also on the same sides of the '9's also on this die. So I've seen it were the '8' on on outer loop could be affected:

Sometimes both '88's are affected.

So look for the spread, that makes the devices enlarged, not the field affected. (cause that is DDD) Like you found on your coin. Oh they get worse as the dies continue to crank out more coins:

First clue that it is DDD, is direction. On your coin the date was affected towards the closest edge. Note on the one I posted, the date to the right, the Liberty to the left (closest rim direction) and if it is on the motto devices on the upper part of the coin, it will be on the tops of the devices.
