I have several completely black/dark blue Morgan dollars in my collection. I ended up getting a book a while back that had them all in it. If I submit them will they grade at all? They actually look quite nice in hand, just flat black. I mostly just want to get them slabbed to prevent it from actually becoming environmental damage. I personally like the look of them, but I know if the community they would be considered down right ugly. Is it worth expecting some kind of grade and sending them in at a higher tier or send them at the lowest slowest tier and save me some money slabbing them? Couldn't find another post regarding this topic. Below are a couple of pictures of the dollars in question.   Edited by daremonkee

I expect the '97-S would get a details grade. None of these look like they're worth enough to justify getting graded.
That said, they all look a little "off" to me, especially the '83-O. Could you post close-ups?

A solidly fitted Air-Tite will suffice. Don't waste money grading coins if your goal is protection from Environmental Damage. There are many cheaper ways to accomplish that.

 No way - just normal nice Morgans BUT not worthy of sending for grading - unless you want to - have at it!!!! |

I agree with what the others have said, the coins/conditions I see here don't warrant TPG grading, unless you just really want to see them in a holder for personal reasons |

Thank you guys for the tips. I guess it was kind of a dumb question to ask. I have airtites too. I don't know why I didn't think about it. I just like the way NGC slabs their coins, but that would be a huge waste of money. Airtites it is.

I was about to share some "black" Morgans my father has with (almost) the same question... are "darkened" coins (not exactly toned) not desirable? I swear every single one I see for sale at Live Auctioneers are nice and silvery... every single one!!

I like flat Grey and buy those crustiest ones now at fleamarkets, garage sales, thriftstores, without angst since I bought a sigma-pro  their ugly but I love those natural junk silver coins. It's pretty common for me seeing greyfilmed dollars makes me pause seeing those "blast white slabbed honeys" to each their own though right.   |
