A damaged coin. When a coin is damaged, they are more of a face value coin.

Close up pics are going to help and Variety Vista is a great place to go comparing. The doubling takes place because the die was struck more than once, not the coin, so most doubled dies will be catalogues there or other websites like Wexler's.

The hub that creates the die, had a misalignment on a doubled die example. On a doubled die, the die is doubled. If it is a striking issue, this can happen on normal dies, and doubled dies as well. (To a collector of die varieties, any MD would be a negative for the coin and probably be a deal breaker. But the graders, don't dock for Machine Doubling. (The buyers don't want a problem coin)
