I'm trying to find a nice example of a 1979-S type 2 proof Kennedy half coin but every coin I seem to find has a similar abraded area just in front of Kennedy's ear (sometimes also on the ear lobe).

Can someone explain this? NGC, PCGS have them graded one at PF 69 UCAM (NGC) and PR-69 DCAM (PCGS) which mak no mention of the abrasion(shiny spots). as well as other sellers in ungraded coins. I can't seem to find one without this mark on the obverse.

Examples noted below:

ebay item number:143917358527
ebay item number:312837893967
ebay item number:114764856642
ebay item number:273947088816

Looks like that area has had the frost rubbed off? And be careful when you look at auctions, 3 out of the 4 auctions you posted are using stock pictures because they sell multiples of that coin. Make sure the description reads like "the exact coin pictured is the one you will receive".

thanks Roth, I do that already. I just went looking at a lot of the 79 Kennedy's to see if that rubbing was wide spread.. So far I only see it on the type 2 DCAM and UCAM coins...
