Yes, classic Machine Doubling. Very common. Just enter " Machine Doubling" in the Search box above to read many past threads on this subject with accompanying images.

to the CCF!

I suggest using a reference site like Wexler's die varieties or variety vista. It will save you a lot of time and give you a much better sense of what actual doubling looks like.

So this increases the value or not? The pictures are from a bicentennial quarter 1976.

I learned that I was looking at Machine Doubling, and gained a great deal of insight into the stamping process at the mint. I imagined that the planchets moved around somewhat, but, I didn't know it was so common. Funny the things you learn when you get a lighted microscope, a box of pennies, and good guidance. thx.

He's getting there. Sometimes the MD is real bad:
Trying-To-Understand-Doubling.-Is-This-It?
And can you believe it, that coin was submitted to PCGS. (Someone thought they had the doubled die) I counted 133 examples of MD that were submitted, they all got graded as normal coins.
Trying-To-Understand-Doubling.-Is-This-It?
This was just a few of them.

Machine Doubling is the fools gold of variety coins. They look interesting to ones not knowing what real gold looks like. Those in the know, have little to no interest in them.
