United States Mint Deputy Director Andrew Brunhart today unveiled designs for the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar during the annual Dedication Day Ceremony at Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The unveiling took place on the 145th anniversary of the dedication of Soldiers' National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address in 1863. Renowned historical documentary director Ken Burns, Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania Vice President Ronald L. Hankey and Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (ALBC) Co-Chairman Harold Holzer also participated in the ceremony.

"It is my great honor to represent the United States Mint on the 145th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address," Deputy Director Brunhart said. "It is also my great privilege to introduce the designs for the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar to the American people."

The obverse (heads side) of the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart. The image, symbolic of Lincoln's strength and resolve, was inspired by Daniel Chester French's famous sculpture of the President that sits inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2009.

The coin's reverse (tails side) was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. The design features the following inscription: WE HERE HIGHLY RESOLVE THAT THESE DEAD SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN - THAT THIS NATION, UNDER GOD, SHALL HAVE A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM - AND THAT GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH. These immortal words-the last 43 words of the Gettysburg Address-are encircled by a laurel wreath. Above the wreath is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Below the wreath, Lincoln's signature is incused in the center of a curling banner. ONE DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM are incused on either side of his signature.

The United States Mint is authorized to mint and issue 500,000 Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar coins to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1809. Authorized by Public Law 109-285, the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollars will be struck at the United States Mint at Philadelphia in proof and uncirculated versions. Surcharges collected from the sale of these commemorative coins are authorized to be paid to the ALBC to further its work.

The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar in early 2009.

I think I will stick to the early commemoratives, the moderns pale in comparison. Unless the mint releases a really interesting design or theme (and by the looks of it, the two this year will be mediocre at best), I won't be buying them.

Hmmm.....
Sorry to hear that Sir Ferrari !!....
I like both the obverse and the reverse.......and am a HUGE Lincoln fan anyway.......so....I may get more than one of them.
I really liked the Bald Eagle Silver Dollar last year too......

I don't disagree about the designs of the older ones, but I dont' have a distaste for the new Ultra Moderns either....

I am definitely gettin one just to showcase. Hopefully my wife will let me put it in the nice china cabinet I got her so I can show it off. Beautiful coin. He is an important part of our nations history. Prolly get a couple more for an investment too. 500 thousand isn't enough to go around. Just my thought tho.

I have been thinking about getting one, but I will reserve final judgment for when I see the actual coin, and not a drawing of it.

If the finished coin look as good as the line drawings, I'd say it's the best modern original-design (1982-up) Commemorative Dollar yet!

The reverse design should look very good on the coin, it's not too finely detailed, IMO it's "just right" for a coin surface.

The fine details in Lincoln's head on the obverse might not 'translate' as well to a coin surface (especially for the Uncirculated issue, the head may end up looking better as a frosted surface on a Proof).

I'll buy at least one of each (Uncirc.,Proof) anyway!

I will be trying to own one.The older Commeratives are quite unique in their designs and I believe this is no exception, just as sweet, and I do enjoy all....

That was my thinking. I feel the design has a lot of potential. If it is translated to metal well, then it could be the best looking modern commemorative ever minted!

Maybe.......just maybe it will be a hot seller and sell out super quick......then those that want them will have to pay more than the Mint price !........(something to think about)
Those who order the first day they go on sale.....might be the lucky few to own one !.....
I don't believe a mintage limit of 500,000 is uncommon for these commemoratives......it's just the popularity of Lincoln that might do it here. The anniversary of Lincoln.....the Cent.......the new design.....the new President from Illinois "touting" Lincolns significance.......BUT, MAINLY, PEOPLE JUST LOVE LINCOLN......THEY SIMPLY LOVE HIM !

So, any predictions on whether or not this coin will sell out leaving people wishing they'd have bought it when they could ?

Given the significances you have listed, I would be very surprised if this did not sell out.
