That is the way I felt years ago. But after you get used to seeing spread on the Mintmarks, then you start to notice doubled dies better. The more you study the information on the sites, the better your eyes are trained as to
what to look for on doubled dies. If you eye doesn't know what to search for, then it looks for stuff that is not there. Such as
Machine Doubling and damage to a coin. You look to see if it is a doubled die showing spread. It it is not there, move on to the next coin. If you don't know what to look for, anything looks like something. (When really its not)
