First off, please be patient with me. I am new to coin errors - my husband handed me a huge container of coins that was started back in the 70's. I went to a coin dealer yesterday to ask questions, but man was he not very pleasant. So, here's the deal. I'm going through this container and am finding lots of old coins and foreign coins. So far, my oldest is 1940 and I have only scratched the surface. Below is a couple of images of pennies that I thought were "off". I've been doing research online, but can never confirm that I am looking at the same thing. Thoughts on these? Three of them seem offset while one of them the "in God we trust" is super off.     |

 To the CCF Sorry but I see nothing that wold be considered an error. You do have what is called MAD (Misaligned Die) but they are not off enough to have any extra value. One thing to remember is that an error can only occur during the striking of the coin. Anything that happens after that is considered damage, no matter how it happens. Things like dings, scratches, misshapen letters, discolouration bent rims etc. are all considered damage. In the future, please include a photo of both sides of the coin. This can help in assessing your coin. |

Please post only one coin per thread, and please explain what you believe is "off" about any coin you post so we can give specific feedback. None of these coins seem off to me. Last three are showing minor misaligned dies, but well within mint tolerances and not worth any premium above face.

The 1968 cents all looked like your coin even the proof coins. There was an issue with the master hub that year, so all dies created coin that looked like that that year.  Note how the whole design was affected. The head was larger and all the devices were larger. They created a new, master hub the following but in time, it also swelled in 1982 enough that they created a new, master hub again. But being it happened part way through the year. There was large and small date that year. So if they wait until the next year, they will avoid this large and small date issue. (Probably the 1974 was also the same event happened) Seems like every year now they must create a new master hub. On the pre-1980's there creating a new master hub, but it was the copy from previous years and just added the last two digits. But the amount of use they now get, they are making them a lot more often with the year on the master hub.  |

I think I see MD on the dates 1968, 1972, and the zero on the 1980

Thank you everyone for your replies. They were very informative and will help me with my quest to get to the bottom of this huge tub. I was coming across quite a few MAD's, so I just wanted to make sure they were nothing special to begin with :-). Also, the information on the 1968 coin is very helpful as well. Is the possible MD (I'm assuming Machine Doubling) on the 1980 and 1972 coin's anything worth inquiring more about? I'll be sure to post anymore questions on this forum with only one coin per post - hopefully it will not be too many and that there may be that "1" needle in this haystack. Thanks again!!
