I found this 1960 Denver Mint Jefferson nickel in a BU roll and am curious about the discoloration on the upper right on the obverse of the coin. Is this some kind of error or just something that stuck to the coin Since none of the other coins exhibited anything similar it peaked my interest and this particular coin was not on the end of the roll, I thought about that as well.

Not an error, that didn't happen during the striking of the coin.
Looks like some sort of stain.

Some sort of environmental staining/discoloration.

I took some distilled water and a Qtip and attempted to remove the stain nothing changed and the surface where the discoloration is is rougher than the rest of the coins surface.

Possibly something acidy that ate into the surface. Hard to say
exactly what it was unless you were there when it happened.

Exposure to a mildly caustic environmental agent would be my guess--didn't exit the striking chamber in that state..

. Possible trail die on the reverse. What is going on with the rim on both sides?

I saw the rim as well but really have no idea there either. When you say trail die, what do you mean?

Kind of unusual to see such good steps on a 60D.
They look interrupted but kinda scarce.

I'm surprised that's a BU coin? In a BU roll? I'm seeing gashes (not mint bag marks) . It could be "Trail die" marks on the reverse F and E but could that also happen from the coin being whizzed? I know this has come up lately in coin conversations... but? Or is this a weak struck coin on the obverse with a ton of die polishing lines on both sides?

But the question I have is, why are the devices normal, but the die scratches are missing on that area? But the stain maybe hiding the die scratches?
