Hey all,

Question.

I have some coins left to me by my grandmother.

Among them are three coins dug up in the back yard of our home.

They are two 1790's large American cents and an unidentified coin with what appears to be a shield on it.

I've been in possession of this coin for 10 years (since I was 13) and would really like to get it identified.

I believe it is British because my town was considered a British territory until 1814. (Eastport, Maine.. an island on the United States/Canadian border)

I have attached a high resolution scan of the coin in question.

Thanks!

- Jack Wilson

I think I found the coin..

It is a New Jersey coin from the 1780's.

Mine is very worn, but identifiable.

If this is the case, I think I just paid my car loan off.

Several "Conder tokens" (British tokens struck for use in Britain, but saw circulation in the early US) also have this same pointy-topped shield design. I can't tell what's on the shield of this one, but it doesn't look like the American stripes.

Hmm, it might be a Nova Caesarea after all; I can make out "US" above the shield, where it's supposed to be on the Nova Caesarea.

After having looked through the conder coins.. some of them have a remarkable resemblance to my coin.

Regardless, it is pre-1800's..

Do you really see the US on it? It's hard for me to see..

I'm leaning toward the New Jersey, but I can't be sure.

Is this rare?

Well , ill put it this way.I was brought up in Glasgow and lived my days there.Ive never seen one until I got to the US this year.
Ive seen them valued at around $135 in UNC condition.
So Yes they are rare but also available.Ive bought two this month , one quite worn was 2 bucks and last nights purchase is extremely fine at least and it was closer to $30.

Edited to add , start your search on ebay , use google to look for 1791 glasgow condor token or just type in condor tokens.
Youll get a better price on ebay I think, look at the pictures and know what should be on the token , theres lots of details and a lot of them are worn off.
