I recently received this 1980p Washington quarter in circulation as change. At first glance I believed it was PMD but after a closer look it was clear that rossevelt is also stamped clearly atop Washingtons face. The rest of the dimes obverse image is there/faint and tough to make out. The reverse of the dime is harder to see but it is there as well. The only predominate image is rossevelts face. I checked the blue book, red book and searched online but nothing is coming back to this coin. Any help or information on this coin would be appreciated. Thanks, Coindom76

@coindom, first welcome to CCF. Second, I do see some grey surface staining on George's portrait, but don't see how this could be anything but damage and Pareidolia.

Thank you Spence, hmm. Idk how it could be an error either but it does line up with the rossevelt dime on both obverse and reverse. Very odd coin. I do understand about sometimes we see what our minds would like but idk on this one.

Looks like glue or some other substance on the coin. No matter what it is , it is not an error as what you describe is impossible to happen during the striking of the coin. Try soaking it in acetone for 24 hrs and it may come off.

I gave it a acetone bath awhile back and no change. The image surface is smooth with the coin.

It really just looks like staining. I don't see any kind of mint error.

If it isn't glue (my first thought), it's some sort of stain, from what, who knows? It is simply post mint damage ( PMD) regardless. Keep searching!

Glue on both sides. Spender. Clear glue leaves a distortion on the coin, but is see through it if it Elmer's glue. I'm starting a new set of images of glue, as we are getting it more often now.

Quote: Dont see it Search on the box in the upper left of every page here on CCF for glue on coins, it'll educate you so you will "get it". There is a whole host of wisdom here on CCF, take advantage of it!
