It appears there is an outline of a D next to the mint mark on the obverse. Some of the lettering on the reverse appears to be double die. I would really appreciate any input, as I am new to this. Thank you in advance for your help!

The 1950's seem notorious for that. I have found many machine doubled examples while searching the 50's. Keep it so you have a reference coin to look at for MD.

Agree with all above. Wheat cents offer a amusement park full of errors, oddities, and coolness.

But just like leaving an amusement park, all you will have is change and memories. Consider this your first thrill ride. Machine Doubling. (But it is still a Wheat cent) Those devices are fleeced out of the width. Even a normal device, is wider than that. And a doubled die is enlarged:

The devices will be larger on a DDR:

Definitely MD you are showing in the images.

As far as an RPM, it looks like there may be a die gouge going SW from the verticle bar and continuing through the center of the MM.
It's hard to tell from your images if there is a notch on the upper serif of the MM, but with all the circulation this coin has been through it is most likely damaged.

I think he is referring to the colored area. If it were a RPM, it would rise above the fields. just a stain or discoloration on that area.

That is how we are here. My goal is to help you see, what I see on a coin. That way, you become a coin detective. Not knowing what you are seeing, we help you to train your eyes. Then the next time, or time after that, you will know what you are seeing. MD is one of the biggest obstacles a new collector needs to know. Understand the logic, then you will be able to jump the next hurdle. Questions, always ask. That way you can move forward. Soon, you will be teaching others. That is our goal. Helping new collectors along the way.
